Blyde river canyon

The Blyde River Canyon is part of the Panorama Route. This impressive route runs from Johannesburg to Hoedspruit and leads you through the beautiful landscape of the Canyon. You will see the most breathtaking scenery and views, such as God’s Window, The Pinnacle, The Potholes and the Blyde River Dam. It is a huge gorge consisting of cliffs and rocky plains that are oddly shaped. In this gorge is the Blyde river – named after the Dutch word ‘Blij’, which means happy. The remarkable environment of the Blyde River Canyon is reminiscent of the American Grand Canyon. In recent centuries, the river bank has eroded into steep ridges and a smooth mountain range.

A boat trip on the Blyde River gives you the best opportunity to admire the Blyde River Canyon. During the 90-minute boat trip you can admire various animals such as the crocodile, the zebra, the African fish eagle and the rare taita falcon. Boat trips are available every morning and afternoon. You will also visit the beautiful Kadishi tufa waterfall. There are also several hiking trails around the car park which lead to different look-out areas of the river.
